Safe test on a copy of your shop
Nervous about touching your live shop? Fair enough. Try the module on a copy first. Test copies don't use up your licence, either with the paid version or with Audit.
Where to get a copy
- Your host: many hosts have a "create staging copy" button. Ask their support.
- Your developer or agency: ask for a copy at an address like
test.your-shop.com. - The copy needs HTTPS and an address reachable from the internet, because Claude in the browser connects over the internet. A copy on your own computer only works with the Claude desktop app or Claude Code.
Which addresses are free
Automatically: addresses starting with test., staging., stage., dev., demo., preprod. or beta. on your domain (e.g. staging.your-shop.com), plus localhost and .local or .test addresses. You can add other test addresses, like a temporary domain from your host, in your TellMyShop account (up to 3).
A 15-minute test
- Install the module on the copy and paste the same key. (Install)
- Connect the copy to Claude as a separate connector, e.g. "Shop TEST". (Connect)
- Run a review: "Review my shop and tell me what to fix first."
- Turn off Read-only in the module and make one change to one product.
- Check the change on the copy's site, then undo it.
- Try a change on 10 products at once and undo the whole batch with one request.
- If everything works, do the same on your live shop, starting in read-only mode.
Watch out for
- Keep track of which chat you're in. Name your connectors clearly ("Shop TEST", "Shop") and switch on only one in a new chat.
- A copy of your shop usually contains customer data. Treat it as carefully as your live shop.
