Retire a product without losing its Google traffic

Paid versionContent & SEO

Old products disappear from the shop, but visitors and Google are sent to the newer model or the category instead of an error page.

What it replaces: 1-2 h in product settings

What you write to Claude

„we're dropping these 25 products (codes below). switch them off and send people to the newer model where there is one, otherwise to the category”

The problem

We stopped selling 25 old models. If I just switch them off, people coming from Google land on an error page.

What Claude does

  1. Claude finds the products and, for each one, a newer model that could replace it.
  2. It shows the plan: which product leads where.
  3. After your yes it switches them off and sets where their old pages lead.
  4. It checks a few old addresses to confirm visitors land in the right place.

What you get

Retired products are hidden, and their old pages pass visitors and search ranking on to the right place.

You stay in control

You see every change before it is saved, nothing happens without your yes, and you can undo it later.

Step by step

  1. Finds the products and possible successors with ps_search_products (name, features, category).
  2. Calls ps_set_product_redirect (up to 100 products): deactivate with redirect_type 301-product (target_product) or 301-category (the product's default category); 302 variants for temporary removals, 404/410 for products that should drop out of Google.
  3. The preview lists every product with its target; it runs after your approval.
  4. Checks old URLs with ps_inspect_page (status 301 and Location).

Safety

Every write shows a preview first and runs only after you approve it (one-time token, valid 30 minutes). Each change is logged and can be undone with ps_revert_change. Undo switches a product back on and restores its previous redirect setting. Redirects for other old addresses are set with ps_manage_redirects (see the use case on redirecting old addresses).
